<br />Facebook's app that lets you send messages to your friends for free, Facebook Messenger, is now available for the Windows Phone platform.<br />Just like its iOS and Android counterparts, Facebook Messenger for Windows Phone lets you send stickers and photos as well as share your location in your messages, and group messaging is also supported. As many schools have discovered, Chromebooks have a lot of benefits — built-in cloud compatibility, good battery life, low cost — but they sometimes struggle to perform. Samsung aims to upgrade the experience with its Chromebook 2 Series laptops, which sport HD screens and souped-up chips.<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.samsung.com/us/business/chromebook/">Chromebook 2 Series</a> comes in two screen sizes: 13.3 and 11.6 inches. The big model is a full HD display with 1,920 x 1,080 resolution while the smaller one is 1,366 x 768. Samsung also says the 13.3-inch screen is impressively bright, rated at 250 nits. Each model has an octa-core Samsung Exynos processor (2.1GHz for the big and 1.9GHz for the small).<br /><br />Yes, those are mobile chips, which means they're efficient: Samsung promises 8.5 and 8 hours of run time for the large and small models, respectively. However, unlike the recent HP Chromebook 11, Samsung's machines don't charge via a microUSB port, instead opting for a normal DC power connector.<br />These being Chromebooks, they're all about running Chrome OS and the associated apps.<br />Samsung says they're optimized for Google+ Hangouts messaging, and each has a 720 webcam to help in that regard. Samsung also provides a "premium" package of apps said to be worth $100, including Air Droid Premium, Wunderlist Pro and LittleBridge.com.<br /><br />LIke other Chromebooks on offer, though, Samsung's new models come with 100GB of Google Drive storage for two years.<br /><br />Ports include USB 3.0, USB 2.0, HDMI, a microSD card slot and a headphone/mic jack. The 11-inch model comes in black and white while the 13-incher is available only in gray.<br /><br />Samsung's Chromebooks may be a step up in terms of specs, but their prices are similarly elevated: The 11-inch is $319.99, and the 13-inch is $399.99 — putting them on par with entry-level Windows tablets and laptops. Twitter-owned <a href="http://try.crashlytics.com/">Crashlytics</a>, a mobile company focused on crash reporting technology for apps, is testing a new tool that allows developers to beta test their apps with real users.<br /><br />The "beta distribution tool," as it's called in the company's <a href="http://www.crashlytics.com/blog/from-crashlytics-labs-announcing-our-beta-distribution-tool/">recent blog post</a>, lets developers ship early versions of their iOS or Android mobile apps to users in order to test for bugs and receive feedback. The distribution tool from Crashlytics is also in beta mode. Interested developers need to apply in order to gain access.<br /><h3 style="text-align: left;">

This is the first time that Crashlytics or Twitter has ever offered a tool for developers looking to test their beta apps. Twitter purchased Crashlytics in January 2013 for more than $100 million, and the company has remained virtually autonomous since the acquisition. The information about its new developer tool comes less than a week after Apple acquired another popular app developer tool, TestFlight, which is owned by Burstly, killing its Android support program.<br /><br />TestFlight announced a few days before the acquisition that starting Android support would cease on March 21, meaning developers using the tool to test their Android apps will need to find something new. That doesn't necessarily mean they will turn to Crashlytics. <br /><br />Apple has announced CarPlay, an in-car infotainment system that lets you connect your iOS device with your car.<br /><br /><a href="https://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/">CarPlay</a> will let iPhone users make calls, access messages, listen to music or use Maps in their cars using Siri-based voice control, touch controls, or standard knobs, dials and buttons in the car. Third party apps such as Spotify, Beats Radio, Stitcher and iHeartRadio are also supported.<br /><br />For this launch, Apple has partnered with Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo. Later on, the CarPlay system will also be embraced by an impressive roster of car manufacturers: BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp.<br /><br />CarPlay will become available as an update to iOS 7 on lightning-enabled iPhones, which currently means the iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. An app created by a University of California neuroscientist can improve users' eyesight to help them perform everyday tasks by their sharpening vision and boosting their ability to see in dim light.<br />
<a href="http://www.ultimeyesvision.com/" target="_blank">UltimEyes</a> asks users to complete tasks such as clicking on hard-to-see targets. It is designed to help rewire the brain to process the information it receives from the eyes — a technique called neuroplasticity — while also keeping the user engaged with positive reinforcement such as a point system. Carrot Neurotechnology, a company that works to produce tools that can improve vision, developed the app.<br />

"What I've been able to do is take my research that started looking at very simple, basic science problems and turn it into a game that anybody that anybody can play that has real-world impacts," Aaron Seitz, an associate professor of psychology at the University of California, Riverside, said in a UCR video.<br />
Seitz tested the app's effectiveness on 19 UCR baseball players. Each athlete used UltimEyes 30 times for 25-minute intervals, resulting in an average 31 percent increase in eyesight, according to <a href="http://download.cell.com/current-biology/pdf/PIIS0960982214000050.pdf?intermediate=true" target="_blank">a study</a> published in the journal <em>Current Biology</em>. Out of the 19 total players seven reached 20/7.5 vision, meaning they could see at 20 feet what someone with normal vision could from 7.5 feet.<br />
Strikeouts from the 11 players who competed in both the 2012 and 2013 seasons decreased by 4.4 percent compared to other players in the Big West Conference whose rate went down less than one percent. Among other benefits, the athletes reported being able to see the ball better, improved peripheral vision and that their eyes didn't tire as easily. Everyday users with impaired vision who have used UltimEyes may have an easier time with activities such as reading, driving or watching TV.<br />
"We're encouraged and excited by the broad range of lifestyle benefits that many individuals who rely on vision, including athletes, but also those with normal vision and low vision going about their routine tasks," Adam Goldberg, CEO of Carrot Technology, said in <a href="http://www.prweb.com/releases/2014/02/prweb11584884.htm" target="_blank">a statement</a>.<br />
UltimEyes is iOS compatible and can be purchased for $5.99 in the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ultimeyes-pro/id805410993?mt=8" target="_blank">App Store</a>.<br />

One of the many new features in the Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone is a heart-rate sensor. Built into the phone next to the camera flash, the sensor can read a person's heart rate when he holds his finger up to it for a few seconds.<br />

The technology that Samsung uses isn't new, but it's the first time we've seen it in a smartphone. It works by shining the phone's LED light on your fingertip, letting the sensor detect the blood flow beneath the skin.<br />

We had a chance to try out the S5's sensor at Samsung's New York unveiling of its new products, and it seems to work quickly — and well. You could question the practicality of a heart-rate sensor that requires positioning your finger on the phone in a non-natural way, versus a sensor you can wear on your chest or wrist (all the new Samsung Gear smartwatches also boast heart-rate sensors), but it's a neat trick you can't do with any other phone. Yet.<br />
<br />
The sensor is part of an app called S Health, which first debuted in the Galaxy S4. Samsung has upgraded the app for the S5, placing a much greater emphasis on fitness. In Samsung's vision, the smartphone is the central hub that manages any number of wearable devices (and possibly others) that measure and provide feedback about various activities. The Gear Fit is clearly designed for exactly that scenario.<br />
<br />
Does a heart-rate sensor on the phone itself move that vision forward? Smartphone buyers will have their say when the Galaxy S5 goes on sale in April.<br />

Back in January 2013, Mark Shuttleworth demoed Ubuntu’s mobile platform. In the market that's completely dominated by Android and iOS, with two more platforms Windows Phone and BB10 struggling for the third place, we felt that it was quite difficult for another OS to make its presence felt. Even today the condition remains the same. Samsung wants to bring back Tizen and Nokia planning something big for the MWC 2014 event in Barcelona. So where does Ubuntu Touch stand?<br />

Even after a failed crowd funding attempt to build their own smartphone, Ubuntu’s founder Mark Shuttleworth has not given up yet. The organisation has now <a href="http://insights.ubuntu.com/news/canonical-announces-first-partners-to-ship-ubuntu-phones-around-the-globe/">tied-up with two hardware partners</a>, Meizu from China and BQ Reader from Spain. You may not have heard of these names, but these handset makers have been running a world of their own, building an empire and robust product portfolio.<br />
<br />
They were brought in mainly because of their expertise in market penetration so says Mark Shuttlworth (or maybe no one else was interested in Ubuntu project). He added that Ubuntu Touch will be “delivering an experience which departs from the tired app icon grid of Android and iOS and provides a fluid, content-rich experience for all.”<br />
<br />
Let’s hope the platform takes-off, but as always, its success will eventually depend on the app count.<br />

It was more accessible and instantaneous than Facebook which is more of a big screen experience. The only way for Facebook to put an end to a competitor was to take over and that is exactly what Mark Zuckerberg has done.</div>

For a messaging app, $19 billion is an insanely large amount. It makes Jan Koum, WhatsApp co-founder and CEO a very, very rich man (he will also join Facebook’s board of directors). WhatsApp has over 450 million monthly users, 70% of which are active every single day. It adds 1 million new registered users every day! The numbers are simply incredible!</div>

But what we did not expect from the acquisition was that Facebook would let WhatsApp run independently. We are guessing that Jan Koum wanted to keep his baby intact and didn’t have plans to let go of it. This means, we will continue to see improvements on the platform in the years to come and not see it being merged with Facebook’s Messenger app (some features may see an exchange). The CEO also mentioned that even though ownership has switched hands, there will “absolutely no ads interrupting your communication”, which is what we think makes communication clutter-free on WhatsApp.</div>

The acquisition involves $4 billion in cash, $12 billion in stock, and additional $3 billion in restricted stock.</div>
